Dog nails and hardwood floors

Dogs are our best friends but unfortunately, they are our floors’ worst enemy. Despite the name, many hardwoods are quite soft and susceptible to damage. A dog’s claws are just as hard as fingernails but MUCH thicker and can leave a mark with a small amount of pressure.

The key to avoiding destruction is preventative measures:

Clip your dog’s nails often

Every dog owner knows this is more easily said than done. Dogs that spend a lot of time indoors are especially at risk for overgrown nails which can also cause them discomfort and health issues. There are plenty of places that will take on this job for you or work with you and your furry friend to become more comfortable with the nail trimming process. The goal is to have rounded, well-trimmed edges and remove any sharp points.

Consider runners for high-traffic areas

If your dog has a frequent stomping ground in the house, consider covering the area with a runner rug. Not only do runners protect against wear and tear, but they also reduce noise and prevent outside dirt from entering your home. Many runner rugs are now MACHINE WASHABLE!

Choose dense wood

If you are considering installing wood in your home, choose a dense wood species like Maple, Hickory, or Brazilian Cherry. Another option to think about is engineered hardwood, which is constructed to be durable and moisture resistant.

Avoid high sheen and dark colors

Both features will highlight the damage to your floors rather than masking it.

If you are looking to repair this damage that has already happened to your floor, there are several solutions:

Buff and Coat

A Buff and Coat is a dustless, affordable, and fast way to add shine and restore luster to your hardwood floors. First, we do a light buffing to remove shallow scratches and imperfections. Then, we apply a new top coat of finish. We offer both oil and water-based finishes, depending on your preference. The whole process only takes a few hours and results can last 3-5 years!

Refinishing and Sanding

In worst-case scenarios, the floor may need to be sanded and refinished to completely remove dents.
