ABOUT

In 1986, Doug Muscanell and Karen Harbaugh established Muscanell Studios in Cortez, Colorado, and crafted exquisite domestic burl wooden boxes for artisan shows.

Sharing a mutual love of quality materials and a propensity for fine detail, the pair shifted their attention to hardwood flooring, recognizing an industry need for precisely-milled, rustic flooring.

Muscanell Millworks came to be in 1995, garnering a distinguished reputation for its thorough milling practices and elevated grading standards.

In 2017, Doug and Karen sold the company to LÄGLER, a German manufacturer, on the condition that their high standards and highly-skilled producers remain with the business.

100% of Muscanell by-product is put to good use. The company uses sawdust and wood shavings to fuel its boiler system, heat buildings, and kiln. The sawdust is also used to create “Woodchucks Fire Logs”, a 100% hardwood heating product.

SOLID WOOD FLOORING

American Cherry is a fine-grained wood that will darken with age. Its beautiful red to reddish-brown tones is often imitated in stains. The sapwood is a cream color. It is a medium hard wood, about 25% softer than Red Oak, but also about 30% more stable.
A time-tested favorite, White Oak’s strength, hardness, rot-resistance, and distinctive open grain have made it a favorite for flooring, cabinets, and furniture for centuries.
Tough as nails, Hickory is the hardest commercially available hardwood grown in the U.S. In any grade, a hallmark of our Hickory is contrasting tones. We draw our Hickory lumber from regions that produce a clear delineation between rich brown heartwood and cream color sapwood lending a “calico” appearance. Our careful drying is especially important in wide plank Hickory, as it is not as moisture stable as many other species.
Naturally suited for plank flooring, White Ash is as hard as Red Oak but about 25% more moisture-stable than the Oaks. Its heartwood is light to medium brown and blends smoothly with lighter sapwood. A pronounced grain pattern and our generous lengths create a rich look of continuity in the finished floor.
Cathedral Cut White Oak is sawn to show off several grain patterns, Quartersawn/Rift on the outside of the plank with more plainsawn grain down the center. This results in a floor with more continuity, longer lengths, and better durability than seen with plainsawn White Oak.
Red Oak is still the most popular wood for flooring. This North American standby is strong, hard, and relatively moisture stable.
There is really no substitute for American Black Walnut with its rich dark browns, interesting grain, and numerous character marks. It is a moderately dense and very stable wood. Compared to Red Oak, it is about 25% more moisture stable and about 20% softer. We start with Walnut lumber from specific areas of the U.S. that is steamed, mellowing the bright white sapwood to a cream color.
Quartersawn/Rift is a special cut of White Oak that produces greater surface hardness, better moisture stability, and a beautiful figure resulting from exposing the medullary rays. You may have seen this “fleck” in Quartersawn White Oak antique or mission-style furniture.

CUSTOM STAIR PARTS

Compared to most production mills, we typically use wider pieces to make up our treads.
All pieces are straightened just prior to gluing.
We dry-fit pieces to create stress-free glue joints.
Treads are sanded to 120 grit on either 1 or 2 sides, depending on the type of tread.
We also offer thicker treads in several styles.

SPECIAL TEXTURES

Blue Mountain highlights bandsaw marks, which go across the width of the planks. The pattern is fairly consistent but with some variation. Even with its rustic character, consistent depth in Blue Mountain saw marks results in a flatter floor, reducing overwood.
Cimarron features circle saw marks in a random pattern. In our method of creating texture, we control the saw angle, the space between and direction of the saw marks. The pattern is sculpted with consistent depth, resulting in a flatter floor with very little overwood.
Bryce Canyon combines band and circle sawn marks. Both saw patterns have similar depth so they blend well. With our control over maintaining the random nature of texture, every floor is truly unique.
Our Buckboard offers a more refined texture. Featuring both circle- and bandsaw marks, it is also wire-brushed. A slight bevel softens the transition between planks. We apply a final step of polishing, resulting in a rustic floor that is ready to install and finish with very little sanding.

GRADES + RESOURCES

Similar to Select & Btr. Our highest grade. Has less extreme variations in color than Casa grade. It is almost free from knots, with only occasional small pin knots (up to 3/16” in diameter) allowed in most species. Lengths of planks vary from 1’ to 10’, with an average of about 3.5′ to 5’, depending on the species. This creates a floor with a refined look and more consistent color.
Similar to #1Common. Casa will contain color variation, and knots up to 1-1/2” in diameter, along with other occasional character marks, but no edge defect. Small open holes, up to 1/4” in diameter, are also allowed but are rare. Lengths of planks vary from 1’ to 10’, with a 5’ average length. Casa grade results in a floor with a rich grain pattern, and sound defect requiring very little fill.
Blend of Casa & Mesa (similar to #1 Common & #2 Common mix) . Will contain a range of color, knots (both sound and open) up to 2” in diameter, holes up to 3/4” in diameter, some cracks and pith, unlimited sapwood along with other occasional character marks. We do allow edge defect in this grade but some clear boards are also included. Lengths of planks vary from 1’ to 10’, with an average of 5’. This grade results in a floor with an overall rustic appearance, but with some clear boards and very nice length.
Similar to #2 Common, but in a much longer length. Will contain color variation, knots up to 2” in diameter, including open knots, holes up to ¾” in diameter, cracks that don’t compromise the integrity of the flooring, along with other character marks. Edge defect is allowed. Lengths of planks vary from 1’-10’ with an average of 5’. Mesa grade results in a floor with lots of rustic character and contrast.
